Español en Cartagena

had times where that in Colombia, the English still relatively little dialect speaking, what the interior is even more the case, apparently, but here on the costa / coast there's definitely enough of them ("Costeñol"). In addition to the expected problems with older people, taxi drivers, street vendors, etc, who speak often unclear and / or unwilling to speak more slowly or more clearly - here, there are regional differences before the English English. I will be mostly a English dialect assumed but try to eradicate the English characteristics and to adapt myself.

But the differences that were struck me here, or on which one has my attention:

  • The 3rd person plural (ustedes, ellos, ellas) replaces the 2nd person plural (vosotros)

  • Indefinido preterito perfecto replaced in some cases

  • La fricativa dental sorda / The voiceless dental fricative known in the English "th" as in "three" in IPA: θ, is apparently anyway only spoken in Spain and its function here takes the "s"

  • replaced valer costar - ¿Cuanto vale esto / How much does it cost?

  • a "coche" is a horse and a "carro" a car, so watch what you want to rent :-)

  • "Vale" is almost never used

  • "A la orden" replaced "De nada ".

  • La brisa / el viento wind replaced

  • own course, informal greetings ("formula" applies very well), one is confronted with "Mi vale que bien! Too?" [Sic] and "Qué más?" with answers "Too bien", as well as customary farewell formula [sic]: "Estamos hablando. One note: informal.

  • The debate will be happy final "s" suppressed and attached to the 2nd person singular preterit: ¿Cómo estuviste s ?

  • Everything here is "chévere" / cool

  • Esa vaina y esta vaina. vaina be used almost like "thing" or as an insult

Furthermore, I must remark that at the level of English a bit lacking in those who have learned this only in compulsory education. Many People visit one of the "alianzas" - language schools from collaborations for different languages (even outside the school) to supplement the level. But I suspect that people on it have contact with tourists this better.

In any case I am to each and every English-hour, and every course I had in Linz, anyway, the 2-week course on site glad you will get any straw which you can, hehe. Communication actually works quite well, except that very first referred to by name, find it lacking on hearing and understanding, of course, is my dialect most German / English-English, aside from my low - perhaps 40 kpm (conjugations per minute):) .

So have fun at the Colombian regards!
